Description:
When opening Polycom BToE (Better Together over Ethernet) Connector to sync with a Polycom VVX 600 I was prompted with both of the following alerts:
“Polycom BToE Connector failed to configure the PC’s default Speaker device because of Active media running or PC’s default speaker is incompatible.”
“Polycome BToE Connector failed to configure the PC’s default MIC device because of Active media running or PC’s default MIC is incompatible.”
Outside of just two annoying pop up windows you need to OK out of this also breaks your current playback audio which is obvious as you no longer hear anything or have an error such as below:
“Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.”
Resolution:
I have not found any official documentation but believe this is caused by the VVX 600 not being compatible with any of my USB speakers. When I modified my default playback device to be that of my laptop’s, this error did not occur when syncing with BToE and my audio playback never broke. You can see in the below setup the Realtek High Def Audio (which is my laptop) is now the default device.
That appears to be the resolution.
However, I do not want to use my laptops internal speakers so I’ve also discovered a quick work around.
Secondary Work Around:
After you OK out of both alerts, the pairing between your PC and VVX 600 should be fine and you just need to fix you USB speakers. I’ve done this by opening my USB Speakers properties > Select the Advanced tab > change the Default Format from 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) to 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) and clicking Apply.
You should now have playback audio again until you re-launch BToE.
