As continuing on Part 5, we are now going to look at Proactive Monitoring of your Lync Environment using System Center 2012 R2. As always there are a couple of pre-requisites we need to complete before inserting the media into the Server.
We need to down download the Lync Management Pack so the simplest way is to use Pat Richards Script. This script is found at http://www.ehloworld.com/1697
I have copied the Script to the root of the C: Drive and launched Powershell.
Type CD / –> Press Enter
Type .\Set-Cs2013Features.ps1 –> Press Enter
Type 27 for Lync Server 2013 Management Pack and Documentation (Download Only)
Once download has completed Type 99 to close Script and then close Powershell Window
You will need to browse to C:\_Install and Run LS2013ManagementPack.msi
Press Next
Tick “I Accept the terms in the Licence Agreement” –> Press Next –> Press Next –> Press Install –> Press Finish
Launch the Operation Management Console –> Click Required: Configure computers and device to manage
Press Windows Computers –> Press Next
Tick Automatic computer discovery –> Press Next
Press Discover
Tick your Lync Front End Server and Press Next
Press Finish
Task will start to publish Agent to your Front End Server
Press Close once the installation is complete
Press Required: Import management packs
Press Add –> Add from Disk –> Press NO –> Browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Management Packs\Management Packs\ –>
Select Both Files –> Press Open
Press Install
As you can see the Packs are now importing
Press Close
We now need to configure the Lync Server as Proxy for Alerts in SCOM. The reason for this can be found on TechNet http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj205118.aspx

Because Lync Server 2013 does not use the central discovery process used in Microsoft Lync Server 2010, each Lync Server 2013 computer that you want to monitor must be able to self-report its existence to the management server. To make this possible, you must install the Operations Manager agent files on each of the computers to be monitored. After the agent files have been installed, you must configure the computer to act as a System Center proxy. Note that these procedures should be carried out after you have installed and configured Lync Server on these computers.
This is done by the following
Click Administration –> Click Agent Managed –> Right Click your Lync Server –> Press Properties
Press Security Tab –> Tick Allow this agent to act as a proxy and discover managed objects on other computers –> Press Apply –> Press OK
Warning: Now this is the part that will take a lot of time. SCOM will now go out and do health checks on the Lync Environment and this can take some time.
Click Monitoring –> Click Active Alerts
And as you can see I have two alerts so far from my environment the Critical Error is about the Fail Replica failing to my Edge Server and for the purpose of this post. The Edge Server is switched off to cause an alert.
The Warning alert is about UM which is not configured in this Lab
